What is the biggest issue facing Western Civilization?

The answer will surprise you.

No, it’s not global warming.

It’s not political unrest.

It’s not crime.

It’s not pollution.

It’s not the economy.

And it’s not energy.

All of those are just symptoms of a larger, more insidious issue.

Just in case you don’t have a dictionary handy,

insidious means proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects.

In fact, this issue facing Western Civilization has been so gradual that most of us just accept it as part of modern life. It doesn’t matter if you are male, female, or something in between. It doesn’t matter if you are black, white, brown, olive, red, or yellow. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young, baby-boomer or millennial. It doesn’t matter if you are republican, democrat, independent, Marxist, socialist, or communist. It doesn’t matter if you are a rich lord or a poor commoner.

This issue affects everybody.

So, what is this issue that is all-pervasive and so insidious?

Before I put a name on it, let me ask you another question.

From where do you think you get your sense of

  • right and wrong,
  • morality,
  • fair play,
  • empathy,
  • risk-taking,
  • security,
  • provision,
  • and success?

Did you get them from

  • yourself,
  • the government and its laws,
  • your religion,
  • or from the education system?

NOPE! You did not get any of the things that define your character from any of those entities.

Here’s the shocker – you received all of those from your father.

The most pervasive and insidious issue facing Western Civilization is the Father Fracture.

A Father Fracture is when you had a bad relationship (or no relationship) with your father. This will lead to having a difficult time having a good relationship (or any relationship) with your Father (God).

Your father is supposed to be your source of protection, your source of provision, and your source of trust when you are a child. He is supposed to teach you how to play, how to take risks, how to empathize with others. He is supposed to give you unconditional love, providing you with confidence in who you are, giving you real self-worth, and guiding you to your purpose.

What happens when you did not get those things from your father?

If your father didn’t provide those things, you will still need them. A Father Fracture leaves a void in your life that has to be filled. If you have a Father Fracture you will attempt to fill that void in your life from another source–a source not intended to provide those things. It could be from the government, from your religion, from your peers, or from your education. But all of those are poor substitutes.

The biggest problem with having a Father Fracture is not being able to trust. If your father let you down in any area, the result is that you will not trust others in that area. Lack of trust will lead to a lack of purpose, and

without purpose, abuse is inevitable!

All of the other issues facing Western Civilization are the results of abuse in one form or another. Abuse of power, abuse of people, abuse of resources, abuse of money, and a host of other abuses. And the root of all these problems is a Father Fracture.
